Many of them went on to enter top schools such as Raffles Institution, ACS(I), NUS High School
of Maths and Science, Nanyang Girls' High School and Hwa Chong Institution.
Throughout the Math Olympiad training course, we employ the most effective training techniques to help your child see rapid improvement in their math
results to maximise their chances of entering a top school in Singapore or overseas. Our students will learn all about how to think
like a math olympian, the topics tested in Math Olympiad exams, how to outsmart tricky problems, and more!
WS is very ambitious and wants to excel in all subjects. However, he always struggled to get more than 80 marks for maths. So we told Coach Leo that we wanted him to score more than 95 marks. After 3 months, it came true! But not only that, WS took part in the competition and won a GOLD! Thank you coach!
Since young, Jasmine was very interested in numbers, so we signed her up for the Olympiad class. Coach Bevie trained her for 4-5 months then encouraged her to join several competitions. She won 2x Gold and 1x Silver! We could see how her morale and confidence got a huge boost. She also cleared both rounds of the GEP test!
My girl was scoring 70-75 marks in P3 so, in P4, I enrolled her for lessons. Coach Kai exposed her to Olympiad training. In the first 5 months, she did not win competitions but her school results improved to 96 marks! Then in P5, she won a GOLD medal. We applied for DSA and she got accepted into her dream school!
Tutify's strong and proven teaching methodology has helped 95% of our students achieve a 2-grade improvement within 6 months or less.
Rote learning (drilling) and memorisation is no longer effective in ensuring students achieve a Gold or Silver award in Math Olympiad. In fact, examiners have been creating ‘unique’ problems that cannot be found in any 10-year series or Math Olympiad training books. At Tutify, we develop our students' logical reasoning, pattern spotting and visualisation skills. So when students encounter unfamiliar questions, they are confident in solving them.
Throughout the course of their Math Olympiad training, our students will be equipped with our 18 Effective Strategies and Tools to solve problems with speed and accuracy. They will then apply these strategies and tools to resolve 90% of all questions in their PSLE Math examination as well as Maths Olympiads competitions.
Enrichment can only do so much if the student is not self-motivated. This is why we have an independent learning approach at our Math Olympiad training in Singapore, where students can take ownership of their learning. We create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students have the opportunity to participate and take risks. Students are also given a platform to articulate their answers. This makes learning more fun and exciting. On top of that, what is taught is easily integrated as students are constantly applying what is taught.
The Maths Olympiad is potentially one of the biggest milestones for talented maths students in Singapore. This prestigious competition can
not only bring honour to your child and their primary school, but it can also secure your child's placement in the competitive DSA programme.
It is for this reason that thousands of students enrol in online maths tuition before attempting to enter the MO to win a medal. If you have
the same aspirations for your child, you must make sure to prepare them before even attempting to enter the Maths Olympiad.
Tutify is here to help guide you through preparing your child for the Math Olympiad.
At first, the questions asked in the Maths Olympiad seem vastly different than typical primary school maths questions.
However, looking at the past 5 years of exam question trends, you will notice that Math Olympiad problems are appearing more and
more frequently in PSLE Maths Past Year Papers.
Up to 28 - 32% of the PSLE paper contains critical thinking questions that requires Math Olympiad techniques to solve - such as
working backwards, method of assumption, excess and shortage and more.
The Maths Olympiad curriculum covers all the topics in the primary school maths syllabus, however, there will be several additional topics taught in MO that is not
taught in the primary school maths syllabus. For example, The Pigeonhole Principle, Combinatorics, Divisibility, Complex Fractions, Green Pasture Problems and several more. Both the
MO and school syllabus encourages students to use lateral thinking, analytical skills, and critical thinking skills in order to solve
complicated maths problems. However, MO places a higher emphasis on logical reasoning, pattern spotting and visualisation, which helps
students develop their Critical Thinking Skills at a much faster pace. Strategies learnt in MO helps students to see trends faster and find
confidence solving application questions that most students have difficulty understanding - including more advanced variations of
questions found in the PSLE Math Exam (Section C: Problem Sums).
MO Problems are also more tricky than school maths problems. It is
thus not uncommon for untrained students to spend hours trying to solve just a handful of MO problems, while trained students can solve
them with speed and accuracy with a much quicker and simpler approach.
The Maths Olympiad in Singapore caters to different levels of students, ranging from Primary 1 up to Junior College 2. Each competition has a different scoring system, some with negative marking (marks are deducted for wrong answers given) and some without. There are no grade bands in MO, so students will not be awarded based on an absolute score. Instead, their performance is weighted and ranked with respect to the performance of other candidates in their test group on a bell curve. Only students who perform in the top 2-5% (in the 92nd to 95th percentile) will be able to win the Gold Award, depending on the ranking system of each competition.
There are various Maths Olympiads in Singapore that your child can sign up for. 3 of the most notable ones that allow private candidate registration
are the Singapore Maths Kangaroo Competition (SMKC), Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) and Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO).
You can register for the SMKC, SASMO
and SEAMO
on their respective websites by filling out their respective registration forms and paying the necessary fees. Other competitions such as the Raffles
Institution Primary Mathematics World Competition (RIPMWC), National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) and Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for
Primary Schools (SMOPS) accept registrations via your school.
